Guess Those Songs

The Game

The game is a simple concept, and one some will already be familiar with. You must guess the three songs (and artist) played for you, correctly, and in the order they were played in. The first person to submit the correct answers is the winner (but no one knows until the competition closes).

Timeline Breakdown:

  1.  On Monday, a new competition begins. At 12am, the first video releases on our YouTube channel. In this video, you will learn all the information for that weeks competition, and get the first snippets of the songs. The length of the snippets do vary depending on the category, but are typically between 0.1 and 0.5 seconds for each song. Not much time right? At the same time the video releases, the entry form will re-open for submissions.
  2. On Wednesday, a second video will release at 12am UTC. This video will contain slightly longer snippets to aid people in guessing the songs. There will also be a clue within the video to help with your guesses. The song snippets in this video will typically be 0.5 to 2.0 seconds each.
  3. On Friday, our last video for the competition will drop – once again at 12am UTC. This will contain even longer snippets and one more clue. The snippets will typically be 1.0-5.0 seconds long. Please know, that whilst you can still submit your guesses at this point, it is unlikely that no one would have correctly guessed the sequence by that point. But sometimes other rewards/recognitions are made so always shoot your shot. You never know.
  4. On Sunday at 12am, submissions will close automatically. If you don’t get your entry in by 11:59:59pm on Saturday then you will unfortunately miss out. The entry form will not accept your entry past that point.
  5. On Sunday after the competition has closed, the winners video will release, revealing the people that got a podium finish, as well as the correct answers. The results video release time will vary as it is conditional dependent but our aim is to have it out by Midday.

How To Submit Entries Correctly

Understanding how to input your guesses is just as crucial as knowing the correct answers.
We've tried to make it as straight forward as possible. Here's the gist:
  1. Special characters aren’t so special here. While you can and should include them in your entries, they automatically get removed when comparing against the answers to ensure we don’t get scenarios where people lose out for including or not including it. The only exception is the ‘&’ symbol.
  2. The same goes for excess spaces, so we remove those too.
  3. If a name uses a special character that joins words together (for example with a hyphen), a space should be put in it’s place to ensure the words are distinguishable.
  4. If a special character is located within or next to spaces, then the character should just be removed.
  5. Any text contained within brackets (and the brackets themselves) should be completely removed.
  6. If there are multiple primary artists, please only provide one in your answer. Any of them will be acceptable. (Please see below for our definition of a primary artist)
  7. Be sure that the song and artist names you enter, are the official designation for the song you are entering. Even missing (or adding) an ‘and’ in the name could make it be marked as incorrect.

FAQ

Our system employs a straightforward method known as the Levenshtein distance to evaluate entries. This function compares two text elements, determining the number of differing characters between them. To ensure accuracy, both your guesses and our answers are standardized by removing special characters (excluding &) and spaces, and converting everything to lowercase.

After this formatting, the text (or strings) representing each song and artist name are compared. If the function returns a 0, your answer is deemed correct. In cases where it returns a 1, and the text is at least 6 characters in length, the entry is also marked correct. Any other result is considered an incorrect guess.

This method is extremely reliable, so if you have an entry that you are 100% sure should have been marked as correct (based off the correct answers shown on our website and the information above), please contact us so we can investigate if there is something wrong with the system.

If a song features multiple primary artists, you can enter any of them as your answer. These artists must be explicitly mentioned in the song, either listed in the artist section or labeled as featured artists.

A primary artist is one that is explicitly stated as a performer in the song. This can be their name (artist/band) in the artist section of the song information, or as a featured artist. For the most part, songs that we choose will be by a single artist, but on occasion may have two or three.

An example of what not to do would be entering "Jon Bon Jovi" for the song "Livin' on a Prayer", because while Jon is the lead singer of the band, the song is officially by the band itself which is just "Bon Jovi". Something that would be acceptable is entering one of the three artists for the song "All For Love" (Bryan Adams, Sting, Rod Stewart).
It can be tricky but unfortunately it must be this way to ensure fairness to all entrants of the competition.

Currently the prize is our admiration for your amazing ability to beat everyone else at guessing the three correct songs.

Essentially all we do is shout you out on the website and in the results video. Our plan for the future is that winning a competition will reward a cash prize. At the moment our current earnings from running this channel & website cannot justify that extra cost. But once we are there, and figure out the logistics of having a monetary reward, it will be implemented. The value of it will likely be determined by subscriber milestones.

The category or genre for the competitions are chosen randomly. The only condition is that it is not the same as the previous two competitions. As for the songs, once the category is chosen, we randomly select three songs that meet the criteria from our vast selection of music. We have a custom spreadsheet containing all the songs we need (thousands for each category) which can easily be filtered on to what we desire. The chosen songs must also not have been used previously within the last 6 months. This is because we play the beginning of songs so if the same song is played too close to when it was previously used, it will make it too easy to guess.

If a song has a shortened word (for example "Livin'" from "Livin' on a Prayer", you can provide just the "Livin" or the proper word "Living". We try not to be that harsh.

Song titles with conjunctions in them (words like "and", "but", "or" etc.) should always be included. If the word is "and", you can provide the actual word or the ampersand symbol (&). We don't want to penalize someone for that as some songs use the '&' symbol and some don't.

During each competition, any non-member of our website is allowed to submit a maximum of two (2) entries, whilst members are allowed to submit three (3). Your entries are reset at the end of each week so when the new competition begins on Monday, you will be able to submit once again.

Essentially it's down to musical knowledge. There will usually be categories/genres that people will be better at than others but having a wide net of knowledge will certainly help you. Music recognition apps like Shazam will typically be of no help for our competitions as the clips we play are far too short for it to pinpoint a specific song (except for maybe Friday's release).

The other element is timing. Make sure you see the video right after it's released because if you do know the answers, you need to get them submitted asap if you want to win.

Competition entries necessitate certain information primarily for verification purposes. These details, including your full name, City/Country, and YouTube account, are essential to prevent any attempts to circumvent the system. Your date of birth is mandatory to confirm that you meet the legal age requirements for participation in the competition. While we cannot independently verify this information, we rely on individuals to provide truthful and accountable details. We do however, make certain checks against the provided details on all winners before declaring them as such.
Anyone caught falsifying their information or trying to circumvent the system in any way may be temporarily or permanently banned from entering future competitions and have their account closed (if they are a member).

Don't worry bout that. We are who we are, and we do what we do.
